The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.3. It happened at 6:36 p.m. three miles north-northeast of the city of Banning. The 4.3 temblor was preceded by several smaller quakes in the same area, the largest measuring 3.2 shortly after 3:30 p.m.
Banning police dispatcher Jackie Barnes says everything in her office shook as the quake "kind of rolled through." Barnes says there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, just a few phone calls from frightened residents. Banning is about 80 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
