USGS 'Nightshot' continues to capture volcano's lava activityThe unique views of the active lava within the Halema`uma`u crater on the Kilauea volcano summit keep on coming, thanks to the efforts of scientists at the Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

Another "nightshot" image, captured on June 29th, has been released by the United States Geological Survey's HVO team.

According to the USGS website, the movie shows the lava surface within the cavity at Halema`uma`u. Keeping an eye on the lower left portion of the screen, one can see a large rock impacting the lava surface. This impact appears to trigger degassing and overturning that migrates across a large portion of the lava surface.

The summit has been the focus of renewed excitement in the world of volcanologists and enthusiasts over the course of the last month, because the summit has been producing its brightest glow since October 2008.

The current eruption opened the vent on Kilauea's summit in March 2008, which has been expanding with a series of smaller, eruptive events ever since. The resulting puka has provided scientists with a unique opportunity to see the lava lake inside the vent, although often times the sulfur dioxide emissions from the vent force the use of the 'nightshot' to see through the plume.
